What is a product collection ?

The MODLAND products will be reprocessed several times. Reprocessing involves applying the latest available version of the science algorithm to the MODIS instrument data and using the best available calibration and geolocation information. A collection numbering scheme is used to differentiate between different reprocessing runs. The collection number is apparent in the MODLAND product filename.

Collection 1 is the name given to the suite of MODLAND products made approximately the first year after MODIS-TERRA launched, using MODIS data sensed from 2000 to early 2001.

Collection 3 is the name given to the reprocessed collection 1 MODLAND products and the MODLAND products produced using MODIS data sensed from November 2000 to December 2002. Collection 3 products were produced from MODIS data sensed from November 2000 to December 2002.

Collection 4 is the name given to the reprocessed collection 1 and 3 MODLAND products, sensed from November 2000 to December 2002, and the MODLAND products produced using more recent MODIS data. Collection 4 products are being produced from 2000 to present.

Collection 5 is the name given to the reprocessed collection 4 MODLAND products, sensed from November 2000 to December 2006, and the MODLAND products produced using more recent MODIS data. Collection 5 products are being produced from 2000 to present.

• Later collections (e.g., collection 5) should provide more reliable products than earlier collections (e.g., collection 4).

• Users are encouraged to order the collection 5 MODLAND products rather than the older collection products.

• All MODLAND AQUA products are currently collection 5.

• A Collection 6 is planned for summer 2011.
