LDOPE QA Tools
The VIIRS Land user community requires software tools to allow them to use the VIIRS Land products. In addition to being able to process the VIIRS Land products, ability to process data products from other heritage instruments like MODIS would facilitate comparison of products from these multiple instruments. Current commercial off the shelf software tools (COTS) available for image processing and spatial data analysis do not adequately support many specifics of the the VIIRS and MODIS Land products, which could most likely result in products being used incorrectly. Land Data Operational Evaluation (LDOPE) team housed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center developed a set of tools for use in quality assessment of MODIS data at LDOPE and for use by science teams and other data users since the launch of Terra and Aqua. These tools were being updated by LDOPE for use in assessment of VIIRS algorithms and products generated using MODIS proxsy data prior to launch and from processinng of on-orbit data since the launch of the NPP in Nov 2011. The tools are written in C and can run at command line or called from scripts and other packages. They are invoked using a UNIX-like command and argument syntax. Subset of these tools are integrated to ENVI using the Graphical User Interface (GUI) library developed in ENVI/IDL. These tools are designed to read and process science data sets within product files that are in HDF4 format generated at Land PEATE and MODAPS and write outputs in ascii, binary or files in HDF4 format.
